The song Auld Lang Syne that is sung at midnight to toast in the New Year, was composed by poet Robert Burns sometime in the late 1700′s. The term literally means “old long since” or “the good old days”. However, it was band leader Guy Lombardo who popularized the song and turned it into a New Year’s tradition starting in 1929.
Dropping the New Year’s ball in Times Square, New York is probably one of the most famous traditions in the United States. The new 2009-2010 ball is made from 2,668 Waterford Crystals, weighs 11,875 pounds, and has over 32,286 LED lights. It takes exactly one minute to drop. The first ball was lowered in Times Square, on December 21, 1907.
New Year’s resolutions are very popular. It is widely believed that the Babylonians were the first to make New Year’s resolutions (and breaking them ever since). If your resolutions involve buying or selling real estate this year for a home or investment, then we should talk. (Notice how I got that in?)
Another American New Year’s tradition is the Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena. The Tournament of Roses parade precedes the football game on New Year’s day and is make up of elaborate and inventive floral floats. The first parade was held in 1886.
